Charles County is situated in the central portion of the Maryland region that is considered the Washington Metro area. This County was named after Charles Calvert during the colonial era. There is a rich legacy associated with the land and many sections are listed in the national register of historic places.
Approximately hundred and 50,000 residents populate a total area of 643.22 square miles. There are three incorporated municipalities (towns) located within its boundaries. La Plata was incorporated in 1888 along with Port Tobacco Village (actually classified as a town) and Indianhead was incorporated in 1920. There are six census designated places within the county and 26 non-census designated places.
